A sales tax exemption certificate can be used by businesses (or in some cases, individuals) who are making purchases that are exempt from the Massachusetts sales tax. This certificate is completed by both the contractor and the government agency that he is working for. It is for the purpose of ensuring that the contractor does not have to pay sales tax on supplies and services which he may require to carry out his contract. He still must keep adequate records of all materials he obtains for reporting purposes.
